but i will get around to it eventually i swear like this is the only manga i'm willing to properly read

although i don't like that kyoya loses to masamune (it feels like the ultimate ragebait) and also that nile and demure and wild fang as an entirety don't exist 😔 as someone who lives and breathes for wild fang it hurts my soul that they're anime only

actually it would have been worse if they were manga only since i prefer watching things to reading them. either way god bless whoever put nile and wild fang in the anime 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 i need more screen time of them

also sometimes i wonder if kyoya would have been my favourite character if he was more like his manga counterpart in the anime because i tend to gravitate towards edgier characters LMAO and from what i've heard he's nowhere near as edgy

Beyblade character design analysis: Kenta Yumiya

Masterpost here. Now let's take a look at Kenta, who somehow went from getting beaten up by the Face Hunters to gaining Ryuga's respect

Starting with the hair, it's green. This has nothing to do with his bey, but the green, and more specifically this shade, make Kenta stand out. The rest of Kenta's design is fairly generic, to the point where some actual background characters have more captivating designs (like Django), so the hair helps set him apart from someone like Osamu. Green is one of the lesser-used hair colors in mfb, and the characters with green hair all have a very dark shade (like Kyoya). Kenta is the exception, which catches our attention when the rest of his design doesn't

Kenta wears a yellow shirt with a blue stripe. The yellow-green-blue color scheme looks like the Brazilian flag (insert joke about the time the Garcias jumped Yu). The design itself is quite plain, but the colors are bright enough to make Kenta not seem like a background character. He's still a generic audience surrogate in design (and character, at least at the start), but without being too generic as to be mistaken for a background character

He lacks gloves or a visible belt, which are accessories used by most bladers. This makes his design seem more generic, and it's on purpose because almost everyone else has at least one of these 2. However, Kenta does have a belt that holds his launcher, which is just not seen very much. He is a strong blader, but doesn't seem like it at first

Kenta wears shorts. There's nothing I can really say about them other than they contribute to his child look (I mean, he is a child, but he looks way younger than almost everyone else)

His shoes are unremarkable, but unlike some other footwear, seems like something a real-life kid would wear, cementing Kenta's role as an audience surrogate for the first few episodes (though he grows out of it fairly quickly)

His hair in Fury is mostly the same, but altered slightly to be a little more detailed. This is still the same Kenta from the previous seasons, but he's older and more mature. He also becomes a lot more important to the plot in Fury. Despite having less screentime than in Fusion, his contributions are a lot bigger

His shirt gets a redesign. The new style makes him look older, which is the primary purpose. The blue stripe is also gone and instead we have a white, vertical stripe. With his redesign being more detailed in general, the blue stripe loses its purpose of making Kenta stand out as an important character. The white gives it just as much detail, if not more, but isn't as flashy. Plus, Flash Sagittario's facebolt has white in the center, unlike Flame's. Subtle foreshadowing maybe?

Kenta wears pants that are rolled up to look kinda like shorts. It makes him look older while retaining most elements from his original design. Despite how much Kenta grew over the course of the series, at his core he's still the same

His shoes are a little more detailed but still essentially the same. Not much I can say about them

Named after the constellation 'the great diamond'/'the diamond of virgo'. Wisdom discovered it on one of his treasure hunts. It's a defense (?) type bey that is made of diamonds. It chips away at any bey that comes in contact with it. Leaves plenty of damage to stadiums.

Most chaotic MFB Beyblade AU to pop up into my head. Part 1: Metal Fusion

Okay this one has been stuck in my head for close to a week to the point where I wrote snippets of it in my Google docs. Basically, all the characters are the same, the plot is relatively all the same, but one or two things makes this all a chaotic mess.

All the legendary bladers are mentally linked together about 2 years prior to Metal Fusion. As in, they can telepathically communicate with each other and sense each other's links.

They all get headaches one day and eventually find themselves mentally linked to each other. At first it's a chaotic mess of "what the actual heck is going on here?!" to slowly learning about each other and their families to "Oh heck, these are my friends and we support each other, however far away we are." They open up to each other, ranging between Dynamis and his family curse, to Chris' troubles and loneliness, and it becomes a friendship/brotherly therapy group. Even Ryuga opens up with them. He's not too much different from main series, but he cares about them and will protect him.

The other thing? Doji has screwed over a few legendary bladers by harming their families. This man is probably eviler in the AU than canon. He's arranged several accidents, including a rockfall that injured Dynamis' father on Mist Mountain, Ryuga's best friend getting injured in a hit and run, and other things.

This changes the situation quite a bit. Instead of Ryuga joining out his own will to spy on this man, end up possessed after grabbing L-Drago, and ending up in a coma. Dynamis, having a bit of psychic abilities due to his training on Mist mountain, is able to sense this, and besides avenging his father's supposed death and Dynamis' father's injuries, Gingka makes it his personal mission to take down Doji and save their mentally connected to them brother.

Enter the Canon.

Gingka meets Kenta and Madoka and everyone as Canon, but during the 1 vs 100 beybattle against the face hunters, Kyoya realizes during the commentary and has that "Oh shit, this is my bro!" Moment and later on meets up with Gingka face to face. The two get along,

And then Doji comes along to cause chaos.

Kyoya: “Hypothetically speaking, if this Doji person appeared out of nowhere in your hideout after a battle, should I be concerned?

Gingka: "...This isn't hypothetical is it?”

Kyoya: “Nope.”

Chris: “Wow, this guy wants blood.”

Kyoya: “....Want me to spy on him for you?”

King: “Oh? We're trolling?”

And from there, the ball gets rolling. Canon events happen while Kyoya gets free training during his spying (hey he's not gonna pass up a chance to train with his friendly rival), he relays what he sees during all this via group telepathy, up until his second battle with Gingka. Hikaru plays a bigger role from this too. Canon continues after that, including Gingka losing to Ryuga and the trip to Koma Village. At some point between all that, the group does learn about Kyoya and Gingka's backstory with both Doji and Ryuga. To which they are surprised, a bit unconvinced, to eventually believing them.

And then the stuff leading up to battle bladers happens. Canon battles happen, the tournament is announced, and everything goes according to the series. Except one more minor detail.

Enter Ryutaro Fukami. I headcanon this precious boi being Dynamis' cousin, with his family being related to a certain... Nemesis blader (more on that in a separate post someday). Well Gingka and Kyoya and the rest of the group make it to the Battle Royale tournament, and they stumble upon Ryutaro during a fortune-telling. He's aware of this link during a visit to his cousin, but is very sceptical about until the two visit his booth

Gingka: Hello! I'm Gingka and this is Kyoya. Your cousin has mentioned you.

Ryutaro: PiscesBlader.EXE has stopped working.

The group explains their backstory, and one thing leads to another. Ryutaro is unintentionally pulled into this situation (and doesn't know what to think of it), and even volunteers to spy on Doji. He gets his older brother (one of few OCs in this case, art is on the site) Ranmaru involved with this, and things slowly start to change from there.

No big changes, Canon continues up to the end of the season, right after to where Ryuga is defeated. Pegasus is gone, but as frustrated and upsetting as that is, Gingka's got his friends and his bros. And Ryuga's got his brothers help him heal. And of course Ryutaro is invited to join in the mental conversation due to his own psychic abilities.

Ryutaro: (instantly regrets it and starts stocking up on headache medicine)

Fuck everything im gonna classpect random mfb characters

Gingka: Knight of hope because fucking obviously (uses fight to instill literal hope in others, has plot armor, achieves emotional results through physical battle, general angel-esc theme, is an anime protagonist)

Kyoya: Prince of breath because fucking obviously (wind powers. uses these powers for both physical and metaphorical destruction. overvalues individualism. constantly fucking off to fufill his own needs.)

Madoka: Sylph of light because fucking obviously. (the person who infodumps about what's happening so her teammates can respond appropriately, and the designated healer)

Ryuga: Lord of Rage because f (extremely overpowered villian. uses The Essence Of Human Hatred as a weapon. lowkey caliborn coded.

Benkei: Maid of blood. Yep he sure is *ba dum tss* but also he goes out of his way on every occasion to be of service to his loved ones, and all of his personal strength/motive comes from his connections with other people. This is obviously shown in his dedication to kyoya, but also in his ability to keep the face hunters together in kyoya's absence, his inability to not become bonded with the main characters (and kenta's group of irrelevant background characters as well fot some reason), and his capabilities in team battles in metal masters.

Kenta: Page of heart. He is initially the glue that holds the cast together, and leaves his influence in his team even when separated from them. He quite literally becomes a part of ryuga by making use of his emotions (or rather ryuga becomes a part of him. his beyblade. whatever.) He starts out weak compared to his teammates and has the slowest improvement of all of them, but becomes extremely successful in the extremely short period of time in which ryuga was momentarily reformed.

Yu: Heir of time. He doesn't have a whole lot of effect on anything when he isn't being used as a tool (ie; the entire dark nebula situation, gangan galaxy relegating him to a backup weapon used only when they need him in specific, him not even showing up in fury until he's needed to bring tithi with him.) When he is in use, he generally takes the form of a plot device. This one is so mean I'm sorry yu.

Tsubasa: Thief of life. He is a functionally a spy, he takes the agents of prosperity from organizations like the dark nebula and uses them for his own means. I think him taking an injured bird from the wild and raising it into an ally is a good example of his classpect in action as well. The whole dark energy thing acts as a complete reversal of his classpect--Yami Tsubasa is a knight of doom.

Hyoma: Maid of time (i forgot the maid of time in homestuck was the designated aries until i was halfway done with this list). Most of his role in the story is either doing the heavy lifting to put the characters on track for the plot to progress when needed, or preserving ancient unaltered-by-time grounds.

Tetsuya: Bard of void. The bard class is inherently really funny + he schemes and causes mischief that's mostly benign on its own but to degrees and in amounts that it becomes genuinely destructive (bard reasoning) and he lies and gaslights and steals (void reasoning)

Ryutaro: Witch of mind because Fucking obviously. (fucks with people's perception of reality. that's kinda it, he doesn't have enough plot relevance to act as evidence for anything else.)

Faust: Muse of space. Listen big bads get masterclasses that's just how it works. He is a vessel to invite the control of space (and time but only as a result of space control) through his beyblade, for Ziggurat. Standing in place forever being a battery for a black hole machine is the most "passively embodying complete and unrivaled control over space" shit imaginable. Also he's DID coded which makes him cherub coded which makes him calliope coded.

Ryuto: Thief of time. Steals artifacts.

Dynamis: Seer of heart. Relays information and understanding of the main character's past lives, but only after judging their worth on a personal level. Powers are hijacked by targeting his personality which is what heart powers are based around.

Rago: Muse of Doom. Though he does personally embody his aspect in the battles preceeding it, his true power comes from acting as a vessel for the force that will destroy the world. He fully embodies doom in the most passive possible way.

thinking about my mfb pokemon au again, and i'm now letting it loose on the world (i wish i had proper sprites of everyone's zero g forms, but alas. pretend they look like that in the trainer cards)

we start with masamune, who, in my au, is an elite 4 member in the johto & kanto league. he's an electric type specialist and has formerly been a gym leader in vermillion, taking over the gym after surge. he quickly advanced to member of the elite 4, though.

current roster would be lera (poison), bruno (fighting), silver (dark), and then lance (dragon) still as champion. masamune and silver do NOT get along, and bruno is there to keep these two from butting heads.

i wanted to give him a bit of a mixed generation team, because in the rematches the elite 4 have them as well.

the shiny galarian rapidash is because it's a green unicorn it fits him. he doesn't use it in battle but it's his trusted steed. he also owns a lucario for story reasons but it's not in his battle party

next is gingka! he's a traveler, always going from region to region and winning the leagues. i wanted his team to reflect that, so he has only one pokemon from each region. i tried to have his team reflect all the different types of pokemon he'd need for his travels. like a steed in mudsdale, a flyer with skarmory, a machamp for rock climbing/rock smashing, or a ludicolo for surfing. i think he has a ludicolo simply because he thinks it's funny. greninja is an ash parallel.

whenever he's in johto/kanto, he stays with masamune. otherwise he's out and about. he's besties with both leon and cynthia.

madoka doesn't really battle. she's an assistant to sycamore because i think she'd be interested in the different types and ways of evolution. she's a bit of a walking pokedex, much like brock.

swanna because northern cross has a swan face bolt, kingler because in the games she uses mad gasher, and the delcatty is a pokemon she got from masamune. the rest are just pokemon i think would fit her. she doesn't battle but this would be her team if she did.

the eeveelution was mandatory, due to her interest in the different evolution methods and types

kyouya doesn't really have a designated role yet, but he's still important to the story. i think he'd have used to be a member of an organization (be it rocket, skull, yell, or something else) but quit that lifestyle, like he quit the face hunters. he uses both big cats and big dogs, because they fit his fighting style.

his mega lucario is story relevant, as it's supposed to help him realize how deep a bond with his pokemon goes and to be a way to teach him about friendship evolutions (sorta paralleling when gingka yelled at kyouya for hurting leone). he is in sinnoh a lot, so all of this came from riley

ryuuga is pretty much a ghost figure. like in the anime, he comes and goes when he pleases, often found training deep inside mountains and caves, or hanging out on top of mt. silver, like red used to do. it is said he can be spotted resting in the dragon's den. he doesn't have a very high opinion of clair

i do have some more vague ideas fleshed out but nothing concrete yet

Ex-Face Hunter OC returns to join the MFB plot in, let’s say, taking down Hades Inc or Nemesis or whatever Goons Abound place. And, being alone or sent alone, they decide to steal the beys of the fallen.

Old habits die hard lol, even if they’ve been suppressed until they met up with their Boss, our Kyoya, again.

And they’re like “hehe 😈” and if questioned might brag about being an ex-criminal or part of a gang/“the mafia” lol

Benkei: 5/10. Cool jacket with the bull on the back and a cool beanie with a bull design on the side

Van: 7/10. I love the spikes and the chain belt

Aegis: 5/10. He’s simultaneously a 10 and a 0

Crow: 5/10. I like the coat

Hajime: 3/10. Really no sense of fashion

B-Killer: 10/10. I love every part of this giant robotic design

Rochi: 4/10. I like the jewelry but that’s it

Tsuyoshi: 4/10. Some of it works. Some of it doesn’t

Kai: 4/10. That necklace makes it work

Kouki: 6/10. It looks good and the earrings complete it

Asami: 3/10. Practically a background character

Hellbeyd: 4/10. Looks good but nothing special

Kakeru: 4/10. It’s camouflage but more can be done with it

Mamoru: 4/10. Kinda plain, but that gauntlet does look good

Mariko. 5/10. Good, but more detail would be nice

Rina: 5/10. You can’t go wrong with a cat girl but at the same time she’s nothing standout

Kyouya vs boredom

In the begining of Metal Fusion, he leads a gang of 100 people who bully little kids, just to kill time, because he doesn't find a blader to his level and he thinks of nothing better to do.

Maybe one month, maybe two, of not fighting interesting bladers and he's already bothering and frightening animals in a zoo, and laughing like a maniac at the prospect of a decent duel (episode 25).

Don't let him get bored anymore. What would happen now he has Fang Leone and he's so strong?

I don’t think Kyouya’s character was created to be cool, dark and class. That’s just how people decided to see him because he’s the rival. This is just an unfounded a priori: the hero is necessarily a happy-go-lucky character, with an easy past and everything one needs to be happy, while the rival is necessarily dark and taciturn, with a tragic backstory.

In MFB, one doesn’t have to look attentively to see this isn’t true for Kyouya and Ginga.

Let’s do some character comparison (and put links to previous posts because I’m too lazy to develop each point again xD)

Ginga Hagane

The whole 1st season is Ginga wanting to get his revenge because Ryuuga and Daidouji “killed” his father, so the easy past...

Besides, in the beginning of this season, he has trust issues, difficulties to share his emotions, and is shown unable to count on his new friends. This issue comes back then and again, but less and less often, and less intently.

Even the “lighter” parts of the season, when he’s acting “childlishly” are darker when you take the time to think about it, like his mood swings and his reaction when Pegasus is fixed.

Every time there is a problem provoked by beys, Ginga goes willingly on the first line to fight. His friends want to accompany him but he doesn’t ask them to (in Shogun Steel, in fact, he’s travelling alone... except in the manga!), he doesn’t make anyone feel guilty about what they should or not do. He’s a very accepting character, never trying to change the others judging them about good/evil. As long as one has the blader’s spirit and doesn’t hurt his friends, Ginga doesn’t mind what they think or do. He doesn’t bear grudge against Kyouya and Benkei for the Face Hunters!

Also, if he was just a happy-go-lucky character, he wouldn’t be able to judge the other characters so rightly. He guesses all he needs to know about them almost in one glance.

Ginga wouldn’t have, either, so biting words when he fights (in particular against Kyouya).

Kyouya Tategami

First of all, Kyouya isn’t class all the time. There are many scenes in the show his behavior is ridiculed. Besides which, he’s acting dramatically most of time (especially when he’s about to fight/challenge Ginga). It doesn’t prevent him to be smart, or the other characters to look up at him, but still.

And he poses! All the time (I’d like very much if someone can give me the link of the post showing he’s contantly posing). And he’s slightly(?) affected.

For Kyouya, despite what the gang witness, Beyblade is a game. It’s his passion and it makes him really enthusiastic. He tackles most Beybattles with the same kind of energy, even against Ryuuga, when everyone was fearing the Dragon Emperor because he was about to destroy the world with L-Drago.

Kyouya’s familial background and his backstory are so lightweight the Dark Power has no effect on him.

Also, when I look the translation for “taciturne” (I’m still French x) ), the dictionnary also gives me “man of few words”. Isn’t that exactly Kyouya’s opposite? XD He spends much time talking, so this word doesn’t suit him. At all.

Conclusion

Ginga and Kyouya are the exact contrary they are supposed to be if we only care about their label (as the “hero” and as the “rival”) and not about their actions and words during the show.
